High school maturity thesis in astronomy
In between the third and the fourth year of high school, students
have to choose a subject and work for one year on a research project. At the
end they sum up their research results and write a maturity thesis. This page presents
the astronomy maturity thesis that I supervised.
Astronomy maturity thesis done during 2008
At the end of 2007, I proposed a project in physics (astronomy): the
data reduction of deep long-slit spectra obtained at the
Very Large Telescope of ESO,
one of the largest telescope on Earth. Lia Sartori and Clara Pelloni have been working on this project during 2008 and
handed in the final version in January 2009.

Publication
Their work has been published in the ESO Messenger,
see the article here (in ).
- Fioravanzo price:
Their work has won the first prize of the Fioravanzo competition of
2008.

- "Scienza e gioventù" price:
Their work has won two prizes at the 43th national competition Scienza e gioventù
and received the mention "excellent": the price of the Metrohm foundation and the
special prize of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (a trip to the ESO telescopes in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and ALMA).

- The best Maturity thesis of the high school (year 2008-2009):
Their work has also won the "best maturity thesis" of the Lugano 2 high school. The bank Wegelin & Co (Private banking)
offered 1'500 CHF for this prize.

Lia Sartori also received the first prize of 2'500 CHF for the highest score, with a mean of 6.0 (over 6!) amongst all
the 122 students who graduated this year. Clara Pelloni received the fifth prize of 500 CHF, with a mean score
of 5.50. The grades go from 1 to 6 (the best) and 4 is required to pass.

Awards
- At the 45th national competition Scienza e gioventù Gabriele Cugno and Giorgio Ciocca received the mention "excellent" and won the
price of the Metrohm foundation and a participation to the international Science Expo in Bratislava.
- At the International Science Expo in Bratislava (July 2011), they received the Special Award in the Physics and Astronomy category. See the press release (in german).
- In 2011 they received the first price of the Fioravanzo competition.
- In 2013 they received a price of 4'000 CHF from the Virgilio Pattani Foundation, which rewards individuals from Ticino who published high quality scientific work.
Publication
Their discovery of seven new variable stars in Camelopardalis and Monoceros has been published in the Geos Circular on new variables.
